The American Academy of Nursing’s (Academy’s) Institute for Nursing Leadership (INL), focuses on positioning nurse leaders to advance local and global change. Through its signature event and other programmatic efforts, INL supports nurses to meaningfully exercise their power at every stage of their career and bolster the growth of authentic leadership among nurse leaders.

As a signature imitative of the Academy INL leverages opportunities to raise diverse perspectives that elevate nursing and the Academy’s inclusivity and develops thought-provoking innovative programming to amplify the contributions and collaboration of Academy Fellows.

The Institute for Nursing Leadership opening session, Courageous Careers: Stepping Out, Bringing All In, featured diverse, nursing leaders who demonstrated courage and agility within their respective professional roles and environments to instill change that reduces health disparities, promotes health equity, and eliminates racism and bias. These leaders shared their vulnerabilities, successes, and the perspective of failing forward on their leadership journeys and in the roles of mentor and mentee. Learn more.

2021 Event


The 2021 Institute of Nursing Leadership (INL) Signature Event “Moving Conversation to Action: Championing Health Equity” was held on Thursday, October 7, 2021. With support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, this event provided participants with diverse perspectives and strategies on how nursing leaders can take actionable steps that promote health equity. Participants learned about identifying and implementing changes in their communities that promote health equity. View online.

Past Initiatives

Appointments That Matter Essay Series

One of the Institute’s aims is to prepare Fellows for appointments to key national/international and state governing boards of health-related entities/systems, councils, commissions, and task forces.
